Mt Fuji Standing at over 3776M and the largest and most famous mountain in
Japan.  Makes Mt Fuji a must see spot to visit.

Mount Fuji is a dormant volcano, which most recently erupted in 1708. It stands
on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and can be seen
from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.

Fuji 5 Lakes

Mt. Fuji has five lakes around it: Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Yamanaka, Lake Sai,
Lake Motosu and Lake Shoji. They, and nearby Lake Ashi, provide excellent
views of the mountain. It is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

The Fuji Five Lake region (Fujigoko) is located at the foot of Mount Fuji at an
altitude of roughly 1000 meters above sea level in mountainous Yamanashi
Prefecture. It is one of the best places to view Mount Fuji from a close distance
and a convenient base for climbing the mountain.

Hiking, camping and fishing are among the popular outdoor activities to be
enjoyed in the area. Another attraction is Fujikyu Highlands, an amusement park,
featuring Fujiyama, one of the world's highest roller coasters.

The principal city in the region is Fuji-Yoshida. Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchiko),
the most easily accessible of the five lakes, is located just next to Fuji-Yoshida in
neighboring Fuji-Kawaguchiko Town.
How To Get There

By bus

The quickest option for reaching the slopes of Mt. Fuji is to take the Keio express
bus from Shinjuku in Tokyo. The direct bus takes 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on
traffic, costs ¥2600, and takes you directly to the start of the climb at
Kawaguchiko 5th Station. To buy a ticket, take the west exit at Shinjuku station,
then follow the circle of busstops to the left. The Keio building is on the corner
near stop 26, right across from Yodobashi Camera.

By train

Alternatively, you can go via the nearby town of Fujiyoshida, which you can reach
by taking the JR Chuo line to Otsuki and changing to the Fujikyu line. The Fujikyu
line passes through Fujiyoshida to Kawaguchiko, from where hourly buses (50
minutes, ¥1700) shuttle to the 5th Station.

Visitors coming from Chubu or Kansai may wish to opt for the southern approach
via Fujinomiya instead. The nearest Tokaido Shinkansen stop is Shin-Fuji station.
If arriving on the ordinary Tokaido line, change trains to the JR Fujinomiya line at
Fuji station.

By car

Take the Chou Express from Shinjuku. Tolls around ¥2,500

Climbing Mt. Fuji

The most popular period for people to hike up Mt. Fuji is from July 1 to August 27.
An estimated 200,000 people climb Mount Fuji every year, 30% of whom are
foreigners.

The ascent can take anywhere between 3 and 7 hours while the descent can take
from 2 to 5 hours. The hike is divided into ten stations and there are paved roads
up to the fifth station, which is about 2300 meters above sea level.

Thousands climb Mt. Fuji during this two-month period. Most climb during the
night to watch the sun rise in the morning. The sheer number of climbers each
year has created something of a trash problem on the road to the summit, but this
has not decreased the mountain's popularity.

There are four 5th stations on different sides of the mountain, from where most
people start their ascent to the summit:

=> Kawaguchiko 5th Station (Yamanashi Prefecture)

Altitude: about 2300 meters
Ascent: 5-7 hours
Descent: 3-5 hours

This is the most popular base for the climb to the summit, and the most easily
accessible 5th Station from the Fuji Five Lake region and central Tokyo. The road
to this 5th Station, the Fuji Subaru Line, is a toll road (2300 Yen), which gets
closed to private vehicles during the peak of the summer holidays (August 5 to
14, 2006).

The Yoshidaguchi Trail leads from the Kawaguchiko 5th Station to the summit.
Lots of mountain huts line the trail around the 7th and 8th stations, and there are
separate trails for the ascent and descent. The sunrise takes place on this side of
the mountain.

=> Subashiri 5th Station (Shizuoka Prefecture)

Altitude: about 2000 meters
Ascent: 5-8 hours
Descent: 3-5 hours

This 5th Station is located only at 2000 meters above sea level and is the base of
the Subashiri Trail. The Subashiri Trail meets the Yoshidaguchi Trail around the
8th station.

=> Gotemba 5th Station (Shizuoka Prefecture)

Altitude: about 1400 meters
Ascent: 7-10 hours
Descent: 3-6 hours

This is by far the lowest 5th Station, and the ascent to the summit is accordingly
much longer than from the other 5th stations. The Gotemba Trail leads from the
Gotemba 5th Station to the summit. There are about four huts around the 7th and
8th station.

=>Fujinomiya 5th Station (Shizuoka Prefecture)

Altitude: about 2400 meters
Ascent: 4-7 hours
Descent: 2-4 hours

The closest 5th Station to the summit, the Fujinomiya 5th Station is the base for
the southern approach via the Fujinomiya Trail. It is easily accessible from the
railway stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line between Tokyo and Osaka.
There are about half a dozen mountain huts along this trail.

The road to the Fujinomiya 5th Station is toll free and gets closed to private
vehicles during the peak of the climbing season (July 15-17 and August 5-14,
2006).
