Transportation In Tokyo

Getting To Tokyo

There are 3 main ways to get to Tokyo; by plane, train, or bus.  Please see
Getting To Tokyo for more information.

Basic Orientation

Tokyo does not have a city center to speak of and there is no 1 way to get to
everyplace but, most travelers will find themselves using the Yamanote Line as
the local consider everything inside central Tokyo.

Tokyo is covered by a dozen or more train companies that operate on a daily
basis but the main line is operated by JR East Company.  Tokyo also have many
subway lines and a complex bus system.

Tokyo JR Train Lines

The map and corinating colors represent the most common used JR lines used
to travel central Tokyo.
Yamanote Line
A circular line that connects all major
city centers.  Most commonly used.

Keihin -Tohoku Line
run along with the Yamanote Line on
the east side of the city.

Sobu Line
Runs west across Tokyo to Shinjuku
(Slow)

Chou Line Rapid
Runs west across Tokyo to Shinjuku
(Fast)

Saikyo/Rinkai Line

Line on the western half of the circle.
Connects to Daiba.

Shinkansen
Tokaido Shinkansen trains stop at
Tokyo, Shinagawa, and Ueno
connecting to the rest of Japan.
Subways

Two organizations operate the Tokyo subway network. One has the name "Tokyo
Metro" and the other is a part of the government of Tokyo.

* Tokyo Metro (formerly Eidan)—Operates Japan's largest subway network.
* Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation—Operates the Toei subway lines
and the Arakawa tramline.

Bus

Tokyo's metropolitan government operates Toei buses mainly within the 23
special wards while private bus companies operate other bus routes. Bus
transportation is convenient for places far from the train or subway stations. Most
bus routes stop or terminate at a train or subway station, and they can be quite
complicated with no signs in English. The Toei buses charge 200 yen per ride
which the customer pays while boarding. Buses run by other companies may
charge according to distance, and the customer pays when leaving the bus.
